ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – A grandmother was caught on video flirting with a police officer during a traffic stop. It would be funny if she weren’t suspected of driving drunk with her 6-year-old grandson in the car.

“You are so gorgeous,” Brenda Colwell said to the officer.

Back in September, police pulled Colwell over in the Circle K parking lot at Central and San Pedro. She had her 6-year-old grandson in the back of the Toyota.

“Kind of buzzed?” the officer asked.

“Yeah?” she said.

“What do you mean by that?” he asked.

“Well, I can’t say ‘intoxicated’ intoxicated,” Colwell replied.

The 57-year-old woman claimed she was just a little buzzed off one drink. Her .13 on the breathalyzer told a different story.

“Ok, I had a juice… um, black cherry… 14 percent Alcohol,” Colwell said.

“Is that like 99 bananas?” the officer asked.

“No, it’s like a flavored drink,” Colwell said. “It’s like a 32 ounce.”

Giggling throughout the DWI stop, Colwell had no idea the arresting officer was State Police Officer Toby LaFave. Catching drunk drivers is serious business to him. He’s already made 108 DWI arrests this year.

“Do you got dimples?” Colwell asked LaFave.

“I do have dimples,” he replied.

Officer LaFave tried to go through the field sobriety tests with her, asking the grandmother to follow his finger, walk a straight line and recite the alphabet. She wouldn’t take him seriously.

“Don’t act like a fool in front of your grandson. How many times do I have to tell you? You are embarrassing him,” Officer LaFave said.

“I can’t do it,” Colwell said.

She changed her tune as he cuffed her for child abuse and DWI.

“At first I thought you were cute,” Colwell said.

“Thank you. I appreciate that,” the officer replied.

“You’re not,” Colwell told him.

She wasn’t done with the flirting, however. Before placing her in the car, the officer asked, “Okay, do you have anything in your bra?”

“No. Why? Do you wanna check it?” Colwell asked.

“No. I really don’t, actually,” he replied.

The boy’s mom came to pick the boy up during the DWI stop.
