FLINT, Mich. (AP, KRON) – A Michigan police chief says he’s apologized to the mother of a student handcuffed during an after-school program.
The incident occurred Oct. 12 at Brownell STEM Academy in Flint. Chief James Tolbert says in a Friday statement that an officer used handcuffs “to restrain the child to prevent injury to the child or others.” It doesn’t mention the child’s age.
Tolbert says the incident doesn’t build trust between kids and police. He says results of an investigation will be released.
The statement offers few details about what happened. Tolbert says police were called because the child was a threat to himself and others. He also says training has been scheduled for all officers in “de-escalation and communications” geared to children.
