SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — A suspect fleeing the scene of an apparent auto break-in struck a San Francisco Police officer with a vehicle Thursday.

The incident happened at around 11:51 a.m. on Hayes and Pierce Street near Alamo Square Park.

A group of visitors from Orlando, Florida had parked their rental car at the park to take pictures with the city’s famous Painted Ladies.

While taking photos, they saw someone breaking into their car.

An officer was already at the scene and was approaching the in-progress auto burglary when the suspect began to flee in a vehicle.

The fleeing suspect struck the officer and another suspect at the scene.

The officer was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The condition of the suspect struck is unavailable at this time.

The tourists are now hailing the officer as a hero.

They told KRON4 that they thought they were being careful because they knew of the auto burglary problem.

However, they had left their luggage in the rental car.
