ALAMEDA (KRON) — A large fire heavily damaged a Japanese sushi restaurant in Alameda early Friday morning, according to fire officials.
Firefighters responded at 4:13 a.m. to Kamakura Japanese Restaurant located 2549 Santa Clara Ave. on reports of heavy smoke and fire.
Alameda fire Capt. Jim Colburn said it took 21 firefighters about 10 minutes to control the blaze, completely extinguishing the fire at 4:43 a.m.
The restaurant had significant smoke, fire, and heat damage, with two other units in the building having minor smoke damage, according to Colburn.
The exact cause of the fire, assessment of damage is still under investigation, and firefighters remain on scene checking for hot spots.
Police were advising the public to avoid the area of Santa Clara Avenue and Broadway.
In that area, Broadway was completely shut down.
