A fire burned in a San Francisco high-rise apartment building on Monday afternoon.
Thick black smoke was seen bursting out of one of the middle floors.
The fire was at three alarms and was burning at a building located at 405 Davis St. This is near a Safeway.
People were being asked to avoid the area as firefighting was in progress.
According to KRON4’s Sanaz Tahernia, it appears the fire is extinguished. Windows on multiple units have been broken.
Firefighters say the fire was on the 12th through 16th floor.
Officials say the fire was burning in apartments and hallways.
An evacuation center has been opened up in the Hyatt Embarcadero.
Residents in about 30 apartments will be without a home either in the short-term or long-term.
No injuries have been reported.
According to Supervisor Aaron Peskin, the Incident commander is arguing with the landlord because the fire department punched holes in walls where there was no fire, so they’re worried about asbestos this impacts the ninth through 20th floors.
Those who live below the eighth floor and above the 20th floor can go back in Monday night. Peskin is trying to get rooms for those forced out at the Hyatt.
They are closing their evacuation shelter, saying the people in the 30 units impacted didn’t come by for help, so another center will open for them at the Salvation Army in Chinatown.
Building management will take over to work with the residents forced out to get medication and what they need on Monday night.
Building staff will take care of getting their things.
