PALO ALTO (KRON) — A female student was reportedly raped at a Stanford University residential building on Friday, according to the school’s Department of Public Safety.
The victim was raped by a man she didn’t know at a student housing facility on the east side of the campus. The rape happened inside the perpetrator’s dorm.
The incident happened sometime early Friday morning, according to public safety officials.
The rape was reported by a third party. Police are still working to get a statement from the victim.
“Stanford University does not tolerate sexual assault, sexual misconduct or sexual harassment,” public safety officials said in a community alert on the incident.
Stanford has been at the center of a nationwide debate on the prevalence of sexual assaults on college campuses nationwide after the high-profile former Stanford swimmer Brock Turner case.
The 21-year-old Turner was convicted of sexual assault, served half his six-month sentence and moved back to his home state of Ohio, where he registered as a sex offender.
The same day as the most recent alleged rape, Gov. Jerry Brown signed a bill into law that will require 3-8 year sentences in cases of sexual assault on an unconscious victim. The law was in response to the public outcry over the Turner sentence.
