EL CERRITO (KRON) — Five East Bay mayors met Thursday morning to discuss installing cameras along Interstate 80 and Highway 4 in response to the spate of freeway shootings.
Since November 2015, there have been 28 total shootings. Four people have been killed.
The cameras would be installed at on-ramps and off-ramps along the I-80 corridor and Hwy 4.
The city leaders hope the cameras would assist the California Highway Patrol in their investigation as well as discourage people from the crimes altogether.
The mayors are asking Governor Jerry Brown to help fund a new surveillance network.
CHP officials say the freeway shootings are not random acts of violence.
“Evidence suggests these shooting appear to be gang-related with different gangs involved,” a CHP spokesman said during a press conference.
