SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — Tuesday marks the start of commercial Dungeness crab season in the Bay Area, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife has declared.
KRON4’s Will Tran spent the morning at Fisherman’s Wharf with fisherman to find out more.
Last year, the Dungeness crab season was delayed for months by elevated levels of domoic acid, meaning local crab stayed off many Thanksgiving tables.
Domoic acid levels have lowered to acceptable health levels, though the California Department of Health has issued a warning against eating the internal organs of crab caught
The CDFW has closed the coast between Point Reyes in Marin County and the Sonoma/Mendocino county line for the fishery.
The commercial rock crab fishery for the coast north of Pigeon Point in San Mateo County is also closed.
The CDFW will continue to test domoic acid levels in crabs to determine when the fisheries can be opened safely, according to CDFW officials.
The recreational crab season opened on Nov. 5.
