MILL VALLEY (KRON) — Someone abandoned a dog near a dumpster and left it in a small, dirty carrier in Mill Valley, according to the Marin Humane Society.
“A sweet but shy dog is learning to trust people again after being abandoned in a small, dirty carrier left by a dumpster in Mill Valley,” Humane Society spokeswoman Lisa Bloch said in a press release.
A security guard patrolling the Strawberry Village Shopping Center found the 2-year-old poodle mix behind a Safeway grocery store, officials said.
The dog had no ID tags and was not microchipped.
“The poor dog was filthy and his hair was incredibly matted. It had grown over his eyes, which were irritated and crusted,” Marin Humane Society Veterinarian Anne Miller said. “Clearly, he had been neglected for some time. Fortunately, he had no serious injuries and appeared to be in general good health.”
Staff coaxed the dog out of his carrier with mozzarella cheese. They have dubbed him, “Mozzarella” as a result.
Mozzarella was then bathed and given a bath.
“Mozzarella has quickly become a favorite of several shelter staff who have been showing him the love and affection he failed to receive in his prior home. He will be neutered and vaccinated this week and then become available for adoption. Those interested in adopting him can call 415-506-6225,” Bloch said.
