PENDERLEA, N.C. (CNN) — As clean up from Hurricane Florence continues and residents face even further flood damage, North Carolina fire crews made a stunning discovery — dead fish scattered across a highway.

The Penderlea Fire Department was hosing down Interstate 40 when they first spotted the fish.

At least 44 people have died since Hurricane Florence slammed into the Carolinas.

Officials warn that through the rain has subsided, the flooding danger is far from over.
