SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (KRON) — Questions remain about why a Utah father would leave his five-year-old daughter alone on a college campus.

Surveillance cameras captured the child fending for herself, with just a blanket, outside in the cold all night.

“She said she was scared,” the girl’s mother said. “She was going ‘Daddy!’ No one was there.”

She was left alone outside Ogden-Weber Applied Technology College early Sunday night with temperatures in the 30s with nowhere to go and no one to turn to.

Security Manager Fred Frazier said she wqas found around 7:30 a.m., hurt and crying.

“Actually, it was heartbreaking for him to see a little girl running along alone by herself. That’s when he got very concerned and she was shivering and cold,” Frazier said.

Police figured out it was the girl’s own father who left her there. He can be seen in the video.

He never returns and they’re not sure why.

“We don’t know really what purpose he would take the child or if there’s some drug-induced psychosis. Right now we’re waiting to interview the father,” said Lt. Tim Scott of Ogden Police.

The Department of Child and Family Services is involved in the investigation, and the father could be charged with felony child abandonment.CNN Newsource contributed to this report
