MARTINEZ (KRON) — Crews are battling a 5-acre brush fire in Martinez near Bayview Drive on Wednesday afternoon, according to Contra Costa County Fire.

The fire was contained just after 5 p.m., firefighters said.

The fire was reported near Rankin Park in Martinez shortly before 4 p.m., Fire Capt. George Laing said. He said air resources were being recruited to help battle the growing blaze.

The fire was burning in a medium-to-steep slope and was slowly spreading, crews said.

Cal Fire is also responding to the fire. No homes have been damaged in the fire.

No injuries or evacuations have been reported. But some neighbors near Rankin Park were briefly told to leave their homes, as firefighters worked to knock down the flames.

“Look how close it is right there,” neighbor Stacee Lambert said. “That’s crazy.”

The fire came dangerously close to power lines and power poles.

The fire protection district said the recent excessive heat has dried out the vegetation, which contributed to the quick spread of the fire.

Investigators are still looking into the cause of the fire.
