EMERYVILLE (KRON) — In the East Bay, sideshows have become all too common.
But a weekend event in Emeryville is raising concerns on Monday.
Hundreds gathered at an Emeryville Target parking lot, perhaps for a sideshow or just to meet before one.
And early Sunday morning on High Street in Oakland, hundreds gathered for yet another in a series of donuts and smoke–in other words, a sideshow.
Some even used an onramp to Interstate 880 for balcony seats.
This was one of several sideshows in Oakland Sunday morning, which also came with reports of gunshots and bottles being hurled at police.
And while these events have become common in Oakland, that’s not the case for its neighbor Emeryville.
“We have not had a history of having this type of event in Emeryville,” mayor John Bauters said.
But a few hours before Sunday morning’s High Street sideshow, Emeryville police say more than 100 cars and some 500 people were spotted gathering in a Target parking lot.
“What we think happened was there was a group of people that was preassembling to go to Oakland for a sideshow, and they made their rendezvous point in Emeryville,” Bauters said.
Emeryville police and Oakland police quickly moved in and cleared the parking lot, but there was enough engine revving to cause bursts of smoke.
Still, it was nothing like what happened hours later in Oakland, and Emeryville’s mayor says he and the police department are determined to keep it that way.
“We will continue to do the practices we’ve had, partnering with our neighboring jurisdictions to ensure if there is a planned event like this in the future, we are prepared to cut that off before it happens,” Bauters said.
