OAKLAND (KRON)—Civil rights attorney Pamela Price talked to KRON4 News shortly after the arrest of an Oakland police officer on Wednesday.
Ryan Walterhouse was arrested after an investigation found that he was allegedly involved in the obstruction of justice and prostitution-related offenses, according to officials. He has been charged with felony counts of obstruction justice and one misdemeanor count of prostitution.
Price is the attorney for Jasmine Abuslin, the teenager at the center of the Oakland police sex scandal.
The crime Walterhouse is accused of is not related to Abuslin’s case, according to the department.
Price said she was not surprised about Walterhouse’s arrest.
“We have said from the beginning it would be a mistake to focus on Jasmine as the only unique case and the only person who has ever been victimized by corrupt cops essentially,” Price said.
The situation that allowed Abuslin to be victimized was not solely focused on her, Price said.
The civil rights attorney says she thinks the case is about officers abusing their authority.
“Sexual assault and sexual exploitation is not about sex,” she said. “It’s about an abuse of power.”
