ANTIOCH (KRON) — A family of three has been displaced from their home in Antioch, after their Christmas tree caught on fire and destroyed their house.

A 15-year-old girl and her 9-year-old brother were home when the fire started just before noon, and sought help from their neighbor, Maria.

“They were banging on the door and I yelled is everything okay? And, they said no. Our house is on fire,” said Maria.

Maria says the children’s mother was working in Oakland when the fire broke out.

According to the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District, the family’s Christmas tree caught fire, even though its lights weren’t plugged into an electrical outlet.

“It’s a good reminder this time of the year that when Christmas trees start to dry out, get them out of the house quickly,” said Battalion Chief Eddie Gonzales.

The fire protection district says the home is 80 percent destroyed, with about $150,000 in damages.
