OAKLAND (KRON) — The California Highway Patrol has reopened eastbound lanes of Interstate 580 in Oakland after investigating a freeway shooting Monday afternoon.

A vehicle was left “riddled with bullet holes” after the road-rage shooting, according to the California Highway Patrol.

CHP officials searched for evidence of gunfire, finding several shell casings.

The shooting was reported around 1 p.m. on eastbound Highway 580, west of Grand Avenue.

The closure was reported around 3 p.m.

The CHP says the shooting is a result of road rage when one car was tailgating another car. While the Honda was passing, a passenger “displayed a rude hand gesture” at the Mercedes.

After that the driver of the Mercedes, described only as a black man, pulled a handgun and fired multiple shots at the Honda before speeding off while the victim pulled over. Neither of the Honda’s occupants were injured.

When the person tailgating tried going around the car, the driver shot at the car, according to the CHP.

The suspect vehicle was described as a black four-door sedan. The rear license plate was missing and the front plate was tucked between the dashboard and the windshield, officers said.

All eastbound lanes near Lakeshore Boulevard were closed while the CHP searched for evidence at the scene. All lanes reopened at 3:45 p.m.
