Here is the full statement from police:

On December 1, 2017 at approximately 10:30 AM San Francisco Police officers responded to the 1800 block of 23rd Street regarding a carjacking robbery. A white van belonging to the California State Lottery was stolen. A female Lottery employee was assaulted and sustained non-life threatening injuries during the robbery.

A second vehicle described as a gold SUV was observed at the scene and is believed to be involved in the robbery.

San Francisco Police officers saw the State Lottery van and the SUV “caravanning” (travelling closely together in the same direction) through streets in the Bayview District. The vehicles split up and the SUV was stopped near Ingalls Street and Gillman Avenue. Several occupants of the SUV were detained.

Other officers pursued the State Lottery van to Griffith Street and Fitzgerald Avenue where it stopped in front of a locked gate that closes the roadway. The suspect exited the Lottery van and an officer involved shooting occurred.

The suspect was taken by ambulance to Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital (ZSFGH) where he was pronounced deceased.

This is an active and ongoing investigation in the early stages. Body worn cameras from the officers involved in this incident have been retrieved and we are canvassing the area for other video that may be available.
