SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — Tens of thousands of people will descend on the Bay Area in the next two weeks for the Super Bowl, and most will take up lodging in a hotel or an Airbnb rental.

But there is a third option, and one with a little adventure built in. Get My Boat has been around less than a year and already features more than 45,000 boats for rent in more than 100 countries, including right here in the Bay Area. The service is similar to Airbnb.

Owners rent their boats for a certain amount of time, and the price is dependant on the size of the boat.

Private owners, as well as charter companies, participate, and Get My Boat officials said it is a nice alternative to traditional lodging.

“Anyone who is looking to book for the Super Bowl has been having to deal with high hotel prices,” spokeswoman  Kira Maixner. “And so, sleeping aboard a boat is a totally different, brand new way to kind of go around that and have a really unique experience as well.”

The boats are rented by the day or by the hour, depending on the owner. KRON checked in with the Modern Sailing School and Club. That company offers several boats for rent.

The cabins are cozy but quite spacious for a boat.

“You charter the boat for the day, and you can spend the night on the boat,” Modern Sailing spokesperson Leigh Hunt said. “And you can spend the night on the boat at the docks, or you can take it to many of the nice anchorages…in the Bay (and) spend the night on the hook.”

The boats can be found in a variety of marinas in the Bay Area, and the charter price really isn’t all that bad if you split it with a few friends.
