SAN JOSE (KRON) — Don’t be fooled by a little rain in the forecast.
Fire season has returned and so have the people who fight those fires. On Tuesday, Cal Fire crews were preparing for fire season.
Think of it as spring training for firefighters.
After a few months off, Cal Fire seasonal firefighters are back on the job and getting back in shape with a series of drills at Santa Teresa County Park in San Jose.
The practice includes donning a self-contained breathing apparatus in under 1 minute and 15 seconds, climbing ladders for structure protection, and mobile attack, a tactic often deployed on fast-moving fires.
Fast-moving fires are already breaking out as the weather warms and the grass dries out.
Communication is key and the firefighters are judged not just by how fast they respond but by doing things right the first time.
