SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — A boycott against Target stores is growing, and it is all about the store’s new transgender bathroom policy.

Customers had a lot to say about this topic, and the controversy is swirling around the popular store.

Target announced on a blog recently that transgender team members and guests are welcome to use the bathrooms inside the store of their preferred gender identity-and that has some very upset.

One pastor’s video is going viral-with lots of hits on social media. And the American Family Association, a Christian group, said it has over half a million signatures to boycott Target for the policy.

Target did not allow KRON to go inside and take video of the signs. But as a shopper, Terisa Estacio went in and there were no sign changes, but just the normal female and male signs.

Some shoppers told Terisa they thought it was weird and wrong.

But outside the store, KRON received more reflective comments.

“Whatever makes that individual comfortable,” Target shopper Denise Ross said. “I think that we as a society have to change and adapt to different things.”

Target said it respects there is a wide range of perspectives. It said there are single-use bathrooms for those who are uncomfortable.

The Christian group said its concerns are with sexual predators rather than transgender rights, saying it puts women and children in harms way by allowing men to walk into women’s bathrooms.

Target said it stands by its policy and believes the policy change allows for an inclusive place to shop and work.
