Officials in the East Bay are warning people to beware of snakes after two people were bitten within the last month.

KRON4’s Lydia Pantazes is at Mount Diablo State Park this morning.

As popular as this place is when the weather is nice, officials are warning people to be careful.

That’s because with warmer weather, comes snakes on the prowl for shade and for food.

In the last two weeks, two people were bit by rattlesnakes.

The first was on April 23 on Mount Tamalpais. A 79-year-old man was bit twice by a rattlesnake and had to be airlifted to the hospital.

On May 4, a teenage girl was reportedly bitten by a baby rattlesnake in a Clayton neighborhood, near Mount Diablo State Park.

Some tips to keep yourself safe include:

  • Hiking with a friend in case of an emergency
  • Looking at the ground ahead of you while hiking
  • Looking carefully around and under logs and rocks before sitting down
  • Avoid placing hands or feet in obscure areas
  • Keeping pets on designated trails away from snakes if they see one

If you encounter a rattlesnake, park officials say to leave it alone and allow it to cross if it is on a trail.
