SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — For many, it was a thrill to see America’s biggest sporting event, the Super Bowl, unfold in our Bay Area backyard.
An independent study released on Monday shows Super Bowl 50 had a positive effect on the local economy of $240 million dollars.
The lion’s share of that went to San Francisco. The South Bay, home to Levi’s Stadium, only got about 20 percent of the action.
Most tourists stayed in hotels and ate out in San Francisco, but not so much in Santa Clara.
Still, many San Francisco restaurants complained their regular customers were scared off. Plus, there was the police overtime.
And traffic was snarled around Super Bowl city near the Embarcadero.
The report is being released at a time when there is talk about bringing the Super Bowl back to the Bay Area in 2022.
The next big game coming up in February will be played in Houston.
