OAKLAND (KRON) — There are now 33 victims and counting after the Oakland warehouse fire, and dozens remain missing.

This morning Sgt. Kelly of Alameda County Sheriff’s Office said about 40 percent of the building had been searched.

Eight people have been identified in the fire.

Authorities emphasize how devastating and rigorous this process is for them and the first responders.

They are working tirelessly, around the clock in 12-hour shifts removing debris “bucket by bucket,” Oakland Fire Chief Melinda Drayton said.

Drayton is a 19-year veteran of Oakland Fire, and describes this as the most deadly fire she has ever seen in the city of Oakland.

While fighting tears, she talked about the approach to this search as “somber.”

“It was quiet. It was heart-breaking,” Drayton said.

Sgt. Kelly says they have been meeting with the families of the victims and “crying with them.” He went on to say that as respectfully as possible, they will begin releasing names of the victims in the hours to come.

Kelly has just one request for the public at this time. He asks that people only call the phone numbers they previously provided for assistance if they have a legitimate concern of a missing person.

There will be another press conference at 11:00 a.m. today with more information.
