VIDEO: 2,000-year-old wooden relic stolen from San Francisco church, believed to be piece of cross Jesus was crucified on

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — A San Francisco church is pleading for the return of a 2,000-year-old relic that was stolen last week.

The pastor at St. Dominic’s Catholic Church said the thief can give it back no questions asked.

KRON4’s Ella Sogomonian explains how the treasure was stolen.

A wooden relic believed to be a piece of the cross Jesus was crucified on was stolen Thursday afternoon from the church.

Pastors said the church has been burglarized before, but this stolen item that dates back 2,000 years is particularly special.

“The symbolism of the cross is of course is the foundation of Catholicism and the resurrection, so it’s a very, very holy piece,” parishioner Barbara Elliot said.

Fr. Hurley said the relic won’t get the thief much money, but instead, the item holds sentimental value.

There are no security cameras inside at the alter where the relic was housed in a glass case, so the church is hoping whoever took the relic will bring it back out of the goodness of his or her heart.
