ALAMEDA (KRON) — Police say nearly two dozen people inside a U.S. Customs and Border protection office in Alameda were quarantined after an employee opened a suspicious package on Wednesday afternoon.
Three people were seen being treated outside the office building located at 2430 Mariner Square Loop in Alameda near the Webster Street Tube.
An employee at the agency’s office in the 2400 block of Mariner Square Loop called police at 12:37 p.m. to report that a fellow employee didn’t feel well after opening an envelope that apparently spilled chemicals, police Lt. Jill Ottaviano said.
The employee was treated and transported to a local hospital. Her condition is unknown at this time.
Hazmat teams and firefighters are on the scene and that some of the quarantined employees are being allowed to leave the building.
Ottaviano said she doesn’t know if anyone, including the employee who became ill, had to be hospitalized.
As of 4:30 p.m., the U.S. Customs office is now clear and people have been allowed to leave the building.
