SAN JOSE (KRON) — Two off-duty Oakland firefighters were shot Thursday night in San Jose’s Japantown.

Police have arrested a suspect, 27-year-old Oliver Juinio, of San Jose.

Around 9:37 p.m. officers responded to reports of the shooting in 300 block of East Taylor St.

The 30-year-old was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. The Oakland Fire Department has identified him as Jake Walter.

The 26-year-old was in stable condition Friday morning after suffering one gunshot wound.

The two men graduated from the same fire academy class about four months ago.

They were out with other members from their graduating class when the shooting happened.

Oakland Fire Battalion Chief Melinda Drayton says the two were confronted by a group of men when they left the event, which ended in both being shot.

By 7:30 a.m. Crime Scene Investigators (CSI) arrived at N. 10th and Taylor streets in connection to the shooting.

KRON4’s Lydia Pantazes says several people are detained & being questioned in connection with the shooting.

Police are not calling them suspects at this time.
