SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) – Relatives of mass murderer Charles Manson’s victims are giving California Gov. Jerry Brown nearly 140,000 signatures of people asking him to block the parole of a Manson follower.
The petition opposing the release of Leslie Van Houten was presented to Brown’s Capitol office Monday by survivors including Debra Tate. She is the sister of pregnant actress Sharon Tate, who was killed by Manson and his cult in 1969.
Van Houten has served more than four decades in prison for the notorious killings of a wealthy grocer, Leno La Bianca, and his wife Rosemary.
They were killed a day after other so-called “Manson family” members murdered Tate and four others in 1969.
Brown has until mid-September to block a parole board’s recommendation in April that Van Houten be freed.
