A man suffered major injuries Sunday after suspects who tried to run his car off the road attacked him in unincorporated Contra Costa County near Byron, according to fire and sheriff’s officials.

The victim had to be airlifted for treatment of injuries he suffered in the attack, which occurred around 3:30 p.m. Sunday on Byron Highway and Holey Road, county sheriff’s officials said.

For unknown reasons, suspects in a vehicle tried to run the 28-year-old victim off the road. The suspects then struck the victim when he stopped and exited his car, sheriff’s officials said.

East Contra Costa Fire Protection District crews responded to the scene at 3:39 p.m. and found the victim lying on the ground and suffering major injuries. He was flown by medical helicopter to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek, according to the fire district.

The suspects had fled the scene and were not located when responding deputies searched the area, according to the sheriff’s office. No description of the suspects was immediately available.
