Firefighters and medical responders rescued an individual Friday from a vehicle that had gone over the side of the road and 200 feet down into an embankment the previous night, according to the San Benito-Monterey Unit of CAL FIRE.

At 9:31 a.m., South Monterey County Fire Protection District (FPD)/CAL FIRE firefighters responded to a report of a vehicle accident north of the Calandra Lookout, near Lockwood.

A mountain biker reported the accident, which had occurred at about 9 p.m. Thursday.

CAL FIRE’s helicopter airlifted the victim from his car with a short haul line, heading to a landing zone where Mercy Air 20, a medical evacuation helicopter, was waiting.

Mercy Air 20 flew the victim to Natividad Medical Center for treatment of major injuries.

Monterey County Animal Services treated a dog injured at the scene of the accident.

Also responding were Fort Hunter Liggett Fire Department, San Ardo Volunteer Fire Department, Monterey County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Team, and AMR Ambulance Company.

No firefighters were injured during the incident. The accident’s cause is under investigation.
