Veterinarians euthanize Almiyi the California condor

SAN DIEGO (KRON) – After four months of cancer treatment, a California condor was euthanized Saturday,

The condor, Almiyi rose to fame after being pictured on a 1196 postage stamp representing endangered wildlife.

Almiyi was hatched in captivity in 1983 as part of a program intended to save her species from extinction. She was taken to San Diego Zoo Safari Park, paired with two males and eventually became mom to 38 chicks.

More than two dozen of those chicks were released into the wild, and the rest can be found at the World Center for Birds in Boise, Idaho, and the Oregon Zoo and Safari Park.

Four months ago, Almiyi was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma.

Safari Park officials say she was one of the state’s most prolific condors.
