OAKLAND (KRON) — It was just six years ago that Australian singer-songwriter James Keogh, better known as Vance Joy, was playing at open mic shows around his country. Today, he is selling out venues all around the United States.

This past weekend, Vance Joy played back-to-back sold out shows at the Fox Theater in Oakland. Previously, he had played at Outside Lands in 2014 and more recently accompanied Taylor Swift on her 1989 arena tour.

He is currently on the Fire And The Flood Tour in North America which will also make a stop in his native country of Australia. For the North American leg, he is bringing alongside UK artist Jamie Lawson, and soulful American singer Elle King.

Jamie Lawson opened up the second sold out show at the Fox Theater. Lawson is the first artist signed to Ed Sheeran’s record label Gingerbread Man Records. He is a singer-songwriter with notoriety in the UK and Ireland. And, currently gaining fans in the United States. He will be coming back to the Bay Area for his solo tour, and will play a show at The Chapel in May.

There was a high expectation for Elle King’s performance who followed Lawson’s. Elle King is fresh off her two Grammy nominations for the song “Ex’s & Oh’s” nominated for Best Rock Performance and Best Rock Song. If her name does not sound familiar, perhaps the song “Playing For Keeps” does, as it was the theme song for the TV show Mob Wives Chicago. King is also the daughter of former model London King, and actor Rob Schneider.

Elle King has an EP and an album under her belt, and she is a breath of fresh air to a music industry infatuated with heavily auto-tuned artists. Her voice is sultry and soulful with a delightful combination of enough blues and rock and roll. Her stage presence is equally as impressive as her voice. Even when having a malfunction with her banjo, she carried on with an acoustic song, and the minor glitch was no match to her powerful vocals. The set included songs from her album as well as a mash-up of the songs “Jealous” by Joe Jonas and “Can’t Feel My Face” by The Weeknd.

By the time Vance Joy took the stage, the venue had reached its max capacity. Those who showed up late and tried to push their way to the front of the stage were quickly turned away by the fans who had been standing in place since before the show started.

His fan base is a faithful one, not only was the show sold-out, but there was a sea of signs towards the front of the stage, long lines at his merch booth, and anxious people ready to hear him sing. When Vance Joy took the stage, he did not disappoint, His voice is mellow; his attire laid back, and his presence is magnetizing. He addressed the crowd and told stories about how certain songs came to be. Like how the song “My Kind Of Man” sounded a lot like Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Simple Man” and how he had to go back and re-write the lyrics of the song.

The entire theater sang along in harmony to “Riptide” which is the song that catapulted his success in the United States. The encore was the latest single “Fire And The Flood.”

The tour continues in Las Vegas, Texas, and it will end in Boston on April 1st. The tour will resume in mid-April in Australia.
