VALLEJO (BCN) — Police have arrested a suspect who allegedly fled after a collision that killed a pedestrian in Vallejo earlier this month, a police lieutenant said.

Dominic Terrell Smith 25, of Vallejo, was arrested on suspicion of hit-and-run causing death and vehicular manslaughter Saturday when he turned himself in at the Suisun City Police Department, Vallejo police Lt. Michael Nichelini said.

Smith is believed to be the driver of a 2002 Nissan Maxima that struck 47-year-old Matthew Bennett of Richmond in the 400 block of Sonoma Boulevard on Aug. 11, Nichelini said.

The Nissan’s license plate was found at the scene and the vehicle was found in south Vallejo the next day, police said.

Bennett was crossing Sonoma Boulevard north outside of a crosswalk south of Cherry Street when he was struck by the southbound Nissan around 11 p.m., Nichelini said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Smith, Taylor Warren Alexander Gallon, 21, of Sacramento, and the registered owner of the Nissan, Walter Pineda, 45, of Richmond, went to a liquor store before the collision, according to Nichelini.

All three men worked at a Benicia business but were relatively transient in the Vallejo area, Nichelini said.

Pineda was cited for filing a false police report claiming his Nissan was stolen and was arrested for allegedly being an accessory after the fact. He posted bail and was released, Nichelini said.

Gallon, who was sitting in the front seat of the Nissan, is still at large, Nichelini said.
