COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS, Utah (KTVX) – A man is in police custody and a woman is in the hospital after a drug bust Wednesday morning in Cottonwood Heights.
Police were called out to the Waterside Cove Apartments located at 1227 East 7265 South on a “burglary in progress” call.
When police arrived, they came into contact with a man, later identified as Daniel Orton, 37, and a woman, who neighbors believed to be the suspects of the burglary.
According to Lt. Dan Bartlett, officers learned that the two had been evicted from their apartment and they came back to get their belongings.
Bartlett said the suspects ditched drugs and took off running. They didn’t get very far before officers caught up to them.
Cottonwood Police obtained a search warrant for a red vehicle that belongs to the suspects. While searching the vehicle, Bartlett said his officers’ eyes, nose and throats started to burn, and they all received headaches.
The officers were taken to a hospital to be treated.
Bartlett told News4Utah’s Brittany Johnson that they believed the suspects were running a meth lab so Hazmat crews were called to the scene.
After further investigation from Hazmat, it was determined that the suspects were running a DMT lab.
Orton has been taken into custody and will be booked into the Salt Lake County Jail. The woman, who is six months pregnant, was taken to a hospital to be treated.
Bartlett says police will evaluate the situation and determine at a later time if the woman will face charges.
