SALT LAKE CITY (AP) – Backers of a Utah plan to spend $53 million in state money for a project to ship coal from an Oakland, California shipping terminal are withdrawing their application for the money in a technical move as they prepare to submit a new request.

Carbon County Commissioner Jae Potter said Wednesday the coal-producing counties will put in a more-detailed application after the Utah Legislature agreed to fund the contentious project.

Potter says the rural counties still support the project despite an Oakland city council vote to ban coal shipments, which could scuttle the plan to ship Utah coal to Asia. Potter says officials will review whether they could ship other products like potash through Oakland.

Potter says it could be a year before the counties are ready to re-apply for the money.
