CASTRO VALLEY (KRON) — USGS researchers started a new project to better understand the Hayward Fault Line, and when the next major earthquake will strike.

According to geologist, a plan to drill 20 to 30 feet deep running east to west between San Leandro and Castro Valley is in full effect to know what the fault looks like deep underground. Geologist will also place hundreds of temporary seismographs in the same area.

Researchers plan to set off small explosives deep into the fault and record shock waves. This is to figure out if there are any other fault lines in the area. According to experts Calaveras fault line might be connected to the Hayward fault line deep underground.

Officials said, a similar experiment is taking place in Napa County. The experiment is to understand how earthquakes shakes the ground across the county, and to reduce the risk of damage during a quake like the one back in 2014.

Experts said the projects in Napa and Castro Valley will be set to begin at both locations later this month.
