SAN FRANCISCO (KRON)—A computer science graduate student at the University of Southern California has been charged with computer intrusion, according to the U.S. District Court.

Sean Sharma, 26, was arrested Thursday on an indictment for transmission of a program, information, code and command to cause damage to a protected computer.

Sharma allegedly bought a tool to conduct distributed denial of service against a chat room company in San Francisco. He is accused of causing $5,000 in losses by using the tool.

After his arrest on Thursday, Sharma appeared in a Los Angeles federal court. He was released on a $100,000 bond. Sharma is scheduled to appear in court on Friday.

He faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and three years of supervised release if he is convicted.
