SAN JOSE (BCN/KRON) — Firefighters have extinguished a two-alarm fire outside a warehouse where they found a homeless encampment in San Jose this morning, a fire spokesman said Wednesday.

Crews responded to a report of a fire initially reported along South Seventh Street around 11:15 a.m., San Jose Fire Capt. Christopher Salcido said.

Firefighters determined the fire was nearby in the 1500 block of Monterey Highway, where they saw heavy black smoke at the rear of a warehouse and quickly upgraded the blaze to a second-alarm response, Salcido said.

Crews had to cut through three chain-link fences and go down a small embankment to reach the fire, according to Salcido.

They found a homeless encampment underneath an overhang and a large amount of garbage outside the warehouse, Salcido said.

The fire was knocked down at 11:30 a.m. and under control around 12:15 p.m., he said.

No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. At the time of the fire, no one was at the encampment or in the warehouse, which is managed by San Jose police, according to Salcido.

The Police Department runs a property and evidence facility at 1588 Monterey Road.
