WALNUT CREEK (KRON/BCN) — A 70-year-old man died after he was ejected from his motorcycle during a crash on Interstate Highway 680 in Walnut Creek this afternoon, according to the California Highway Patrol Tuesday.
The crash was initially reported along Highway 680 near the North Main Street off-ramp at 12:41 p.m., CHP Officer John Fransen said.
Contra Costa County Fire Protection District personnel responded shortly afterward and determined that a motorcycle and a vehicle were involved in a collision on the highway’s northbound side, Fire Inspector Steve Aubert said.
The motorcyclist was ejected during the collision and landed on the highway’s southbound lanes, Aubert said.
Medical personnel provided aid to the motorcyclist, who was taken to John Muir Medical Center for treatment of serious injuries, Aubert said.
Shortly after 1:30 p.m., CHP officials confirmed that the incident is being classified as a fatality, but were not immediately able to provide further details.
Aubert said a motorist had to be extricated from a vehicle on the highway’s southbound lanes. The vehicle was not involved in the initial crash.
A Sig-alert was issued by the CHP at 1:01 p.m. alerting motorists that lanes are blocked in both directions of the highway.
