University of South Carolina fraternity suspended after student taken to hospital

COLUMBIA, SC (WSPA) – The Pi Kappa Pi fraternity has been suspended during a review of allegations of chapter misconduct at the University of South Carolina.

The university says there is potential for individual conduct charges and that a USC student was taken to the hospital for injuries in relation to the incident.

The Richland County Sheriff’s Department and the University of South Carolina Police Department are investigating. A deputy and an officer responded to Richland Memorial Hospital for the injured student early Friday morning.

A USC spokesperson said in a statement that they, “are taking a very proactive stance toward curbing these [negative and abusive] behaviors and the conversation around Greek life is just one example of that.”

The statement went on to say, “We are continuing our efforts to educate students and their parents about appropriate conduct, what to expect as a new member and the dangers of abusive behaviors like alcohol and drug use, hazing, sexual assault and harassment and discrimination.”
