United changes its surfboard policy for flights to, from California

It’s a pretty good time to get stoked if you’re flying United with a surfboard to/from California.

The airline announced it will no longer be charging $150 to $200 for surfboard baggage fees for flights to and from the Golden State.

Gov. Jerry Brown declared surfing as the official state sport back in August.

“We want to make it easier for customers to surf our beautiful beaches, whether they’re visiting or call the Golden State home,” Janet Lamkin, United’s president for California, told Forbes.

But according to USA Today maybe the airline is just trying to ride the waves with other airlines who have already made similar changes.

Hawaiian Airlines changed its surfboard policies last year, and so did Alaska Airlines.

Alaska charges its standard $25 fee baggage fee each way for the surfboards.

United’s new surfboard policy does not apply to other routes including connecting flights.
