HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. (WNCN) – A University of North Carolina football player accused of sexual assault by another student surrendered to authorities Wednesday morning, according to the Orange County Clerk of Court.
A warrant issued Tuesday for Allen Artis accuses the junior linebacker from Marietta, Georgia of misdemeanor sexual battery and misdemeanor assault on a female.
Artis was accompanied by his attorney when he turned himself in.
Sophomore Delaney Robinson, 19, of Apex, said she was assaulted Feb. 14 in an apartment at the Ram Village complex on the University’s campus.
During a news conference Tuesday, Robinson said she has struggled in bringing her attacker to justice. She claimed the University was not holding the accused attacker accountable.
She said the investigation conducted by University of North Carolina Department of Public Safety was “ineffective.”
Orange County District Attorney Jim Woodall said there an active, ongoing investigation into the incident.
Woodall said his office is waiting on some toxicology reports which may be part of the rape kit taken following the assault.
Tuesday afternoon, Allen was indefinitely suspended from the football team.
Allen was released on a $5,000 unsecured bond.
He was originally scheduled to appear in court Thursday but that was moved to 2 p.m. Wednesday.
