SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – David Littlejohn, who taught journalism at UC Berkeley for 35 years, urging students to be bold storytellers and critics, died after a long physical decline. He was 78.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports Littlejohn died June 4 at his Kensington home.

Littlejohn was a professor emeritus at the Graduate School of Journalism who was recognized for his work as a writer and television host.

Born in San Francisco in 1937, he attended Junipero Serra High in San Mateo before graduating in 1959 from UC Berkeley, where he studied architecture. He went on to get his doctorate from Harvard and in 1963, he began teaching at Berkeley in what he described as his “dream job.”

He worked as a “critic at large,” hosting a weekly show on public television and eventually writing for publications including the Times of London and the Wall Street Journal.
