(BCN)—-The U.S. Senate has passed a resolution honoring the 36 people who died in a fire at a warehouse in Oakland’s Fruitvale district earlier this month, elected officials said today.
Senate Resolution 637, which was approved on Saturday, also commended the brave first responders who worked tirelessly under difficult conditions to bring comfort to the families of the victims of the Dec. 2 fire.
“I want to thank the Senate for passing this resolution in memory of the victims of this tragic fire,” Rep. Barbara Lee, D-Oakland, said in a statement.
“My deepest condolences and prayers remain with the victims’ families and their loved ones during this anguishing time. As we begin the difficult healing process, it is gratifying to know that our city has the support of communities around the country,” Lee said.
U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-California, said, “The American people stand with Oakland as the city mourns the victims of the horrific warehouse fire. The resolution honors their memory and recognizes the heroic efforts of our first responders to save lives and heal the community.”
U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-California, said, “I stand with the loved ones of all the victims and the people of Oakland in the aftermath of this horrific tragedy. Our grief must be followed by action to ensure that something like this never happens again.”
Last Thursday, the U.S. House of Representatives observed a moment of silence for the people who died in the fire at the “Ghost Ship” warehouse at 1315 31st Ave.
Federal officials said on Sunday that Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives investigators have completed their work at the site of the fire and will hold a news conference on Tuesday to discuss their results.
