OAKLAND (KRON) — Two people were trapped in a car that was stranded in high tide off of the Bay Bridge Tuesday morning.
CHP officials first received a report of a stuck car around 8 a.m. near westbound I-80 near the bridge’s toll plaza, California Highway Patrol officials said.
The driver and the passenger fell asleep in their parked car overnight on the frontage road and woke up surrounded by water.
While they were sleeping, the tide had pushed them further into the San Francisco Bay, according to CHP officials.
Authorities told them to stay in their car and wait for the tide to regress.
KRON 4’s Terisa Estacio was among a handful of people at the scene. Estacio jumped the fence to assess the situation and talk to the victims.
Estacio was able to coordinate with CHP and helped them navigate the car out of the water and back onto the road.
The car was stuck in 2 to 3 inches of water, CHP said.
Both individuals were uninjured.
