MONTEREY (BCN) — Two people were injured sometime Thursday or Friday in a massive wildfire in Monterey County that has killed one and destroyed 57 homes, a fire information officer said.
The two people suffered injuries that are not considered life-threatening, Soberanes Fire spokeswoman Deb MacLean said. She did not have any more information about the incidents.
The Soberanes Fire started when someone abandoned an illegal campfire at about 9 a.m. on July 22 in Garrapata State Park.
The fire has burned 55,600 acres, prompting a state of emergency declaration for Monterey County on July 26.
As of 2:50 p.m. the fire was 40 percent contained but it may take until the end of the month to contain all of it, MacLean said.
More than 5,600 fire personnel are working to extinguish the blaze that is still threatening 2,000 homes.
About 300 people have been evacuated.
