BERKELEY (BCN) — Two Berkeley police officers were injured while struggling with a wanted suspect who refused to leave the downtown Wells Fargo bank this morning, according to police.

The officers responded to the bank at the corner of Shattuck Avenue and Center Street at 10:31 a.m. when bank employees reported a man refused to leave, police said.

The man, later identified as 44-year-old Elliot Chance, still refused to leave the bank once the officers arrived, and they later realized there was a warrant for his arrest, according to police.

As the officers tried to arrest Chance, he resisted. He and the two officers fell to the ground fighting, police said. The officers called for backup and eventually the man was detained.

During the fight, one officer was seriously injured. He was taken to a hospital to be treated for his injuries, which were not considered life-threatening. The other officer was injured as well but did not require hospitalization, police said.

Chance was taken to a hospital for evaluation. He was arrested on suspicion of resisting arrest and his outstanding warrant, police said.
