FORT BAKER (KRON) — Two men stranded on a steep cliff over the Pacific ocean are suspected of vandalizing a historic military structure near Fort Baker.

The two men got stuck on a cliff near Battery Yates after they spotted Golden Gate National Recreation Area rangers approaching them.

“They tried to evade arrest by scrambling down a steep cliff near the water’s edge,” said Alexandra Picavet, GGNRA spokeswoman.

Rangers and Southern Marin Fire rescue teams rescued the first man using technical rope skills and climbing gear, according to Picavet. The second man was lifted to safety by a long-line from the CHP helicopter.

Both men are in custody and the vandalism case is still under investigation.
