PALO ALTO (BCN) — One northbound lane and one southbound lane of Alma Street in Palo Alto is shut down Friday morning after a contractor hit a water line that provides water for firefighting, a utility spokesperson said.

The contractor hit the line sometime before 8:30 a.m. in the 1300 block of Alma Street, Palo Alto Utilities spokeswoman Catherine Elvert said.

Utility officials expect that the lanes will be closed all day, Elvert said.

The closed lanes may impact commuters this evening and utility officials are asking anyone that can take a different way home to help alleviate congestion, she said.
