COTATI, Calif. (KRON) — Two dead American Crows in Marin and Sonoma Counties have tested positive being infected with West Nile Virus, Friday afternoon.

According to the Marin/Sonoma Mosquito and Vector Control District, one bird was discovered on Thornwood Terrace and Tarragon Drive in San Rafael. The other bird was discovered in the area of Aviation Boulevard and Brickway Boulevard in Santa Rosa.

District officials are urging residents to stay aware of the potential threat both West Nile and Zika Virus carry.

“While Zika virus is making headlines globally, it is important that we do not forget about the threat West Nile virus poses to us locally,” stated Angie Nakano, Scientific Programs Manager for the Marin/Sonoma Mosquito & Vector Control District.

“Residents should continue to take personal protection measures against mosquitoes and reduce mosquito habitat on their properties,” Nakano said.

In an effort to reduce exposure to mosquitoes and the risk of contracting the virus, officials urge residents to follow these tips.

  • Avoid being outdoors during peak mosquito activity (dawn and dusk).
  • Use mosquito repellents containing DEET, picaridin or oil of lemon eucalyptus (always carefully read and follow the directions on the label!)
  • Wear protective clothing such as long sleeves and long pants.
  • Keep doors and windows closed whenever possible.
  • Check and maintain all window and door screens.

District officials said both counties will continue to be monitored for additional virus activity.
