SANTA ROSA (KRON) — A Santa Rosa man was arrested Friday after a witness reported seeing him trying to break into a bank’s night deposit box, according to Santa Rosa police. Apparently, police added, this wasn’t the first time the suspect attempted this type of robbery.

Just before 8 a.m. Friday, officers responded to the US Bank at 2300 Magowan Drive where a concerned citizen reported seeing someone “fishing in the night deposit box,” according to police. The subject was attempting to manipulate the night deposit box and remove envelopes, police said.

The citizen watched the subject as they called the police. After several minutes when the suspect was unable to access the night deposit box, the witness told police, the man left the area on foot.

An officer in the area located the subject, later identified as 27-year-old John Giromni Jr., walking west on Sonoma Ave. from Farmers Lane, police said. The witness positively identified the Santa Rosa man as the person they had seen attempting to gain access into the night deposit box, according to police.

Giromni was arrested on suspicion of attempted burglary, and for probation violation and possession of burglary, police said. He was booked into the Sonoma County Jail.

Later Friday afternoon, police contacted another bank regarding the incident. After reviewing the Exchange Bank’s surveillance footage, it was confirmed Giromni had attempted, as well, to gain access to an Exchange Bank’s night deposit box, police said. That branch is located at 2416 Montgomery Drive.
